Religious Intolerance by an Evangelical Chaplain
On April 29, 2020, Colonel Moon H. Kim, senior chaplain at Camp Humphreys in South Korea, an evangelical Army chaplain, used his official Army email account to send a digital copy of John Piper’s Coronavirus and Christ that claims “some people will be infected with the coronavirus as a specific judgment from God” for so-called “sins” like same-sex relationships (i.e., anti-LGBTQ material) to subordinate officers. Twenty-two military chaplains, concerned for the religious liberty and pastoral care of their troops, have reached out to the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) for help asking the Pentagon to investigate and discipline Chaplain Kim. As noted elsewhere on this website, evangelical (typically ultra-conservative right-wing) ministers predominate in the military as they typically “flood” openings for chaplain positions, where their ideological mindset and training result in conflicts with military members of various other faiths.
